Beta Beta Beta

Beta Beta Beta is the National Biology Honor Society, primarily for undergraduate students. The major objectives of Beta Beta Beta are to stimulate scholarship in the biological sciences, promote the dissemination of biological knowledge, and to encourage biological research. The honorary is also a service and social organization for biology majors and any students interested in the biological sciences. Slippery Rock's chapter of "Tri-Beta" (as we are commonly known) is the Lambda Lambda chapter. Dr. Sigmund serves as the are the chapter's advisor.

The Lambda Lambda Chapter is an active chapter and continues to be involved in many different activities. Each year the honorary has sponsored a tutoring program for freshman biology courses.  The honorary participates in several service activities, including the Adopt-a-Highway program and Project Christmas Elf. They have also provided outstanding service by assisting Dr. Sigmund as the University Coordinator of the regional meeting of the PJAS (Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science). Not only have they served as judges, but acted as audiovisual coordinators for the various campus buildings where the meeting is held. The chapter has held Rock-a-thons, did a Kennywood Fright Night, and canned at Walmart in recent years, earning $1000. for the Marine Science Consortium's new cafeteria, $600. for the scholarship remembering the much-loved Dr. Pugliese, and over $1000. each of the last several years for Relay for Life.  The chapter typically takes two biologically-related field trips each year.   Trips have included hiking at McConnell's Mill, skiing, weekend trips to the Marine Science Consortium in Virginia, Washington, DC, both the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Zoos, Sea World, the Carnegie Science Center, the Phipps Conservatory and National Aviary in Pittsburgh, the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.  Most years the chapter also invites a Biology Alum to return to campus for a lecture.  Tri-Beta also co-hosts the Annual Fall Picnic for incoming freshmen, upperclassmen, and faculty.
