STUDENT ABILITIES EXPECTED AT COURSE END
Dr. Rachela Permenter English 101, Slippery Rock University
1. Analytical reading.
- Reads professional and student essays with the ability to determine (or note
the absence of) the writer's thesis and main points in support of that thesis.
- Reading various forms of writing, states substantiated opinions about the
writer's purpose and intended audience.
- Supports a statement about the merits and/or weaknesses of essays and other
writings based on (1) articulated criteria and (2) detailed evidence from the
writing.
2. Effective writing. Exchanges information and expresses ideas confidently
in formal and informal contexts.
- Writes for a variety of purposes and audiences with appropriate form, word
choice, tone, development, and support.
- Shows awareness of the audience's degree of knowledge, values, need for
clarity, right to an opinion, and expectation of interest.
- Develops writing through the use of multiple drafts and meaningful revision.
- Uses writing not only as a way to communicate, but also as a way to learn.
- Demonstrates an appropriate process for refining writing to a polished formal
draft employing appropriate format and conventions (usage, spelling,
punctuation, sentence structure, etc.).
3. Meaningful listening and observation.
- Demonstrates the ability to listen and consider others' opinions.
- Exhibits curiosity about and respect for the lives and viewpoints of people
from varied backgrounds and life experiences.
- Shows an expanding knowledge of the diversity of this campus and a global
community with which we are learning to communicate.
