BASIS FOR GRADES

Grading for College Writing I is recorded as A, B, C, or NC (No Credit). An NC grade is not counted in your QPA, but of course you must take the course again. If an NC is received a second semester it is averaged into your QPA as an F.

Final grades for this course will be assessed by your percentage of points.
Scale:
92-100% = A
81-91% = B
69-80% = C
0-68% = NC

*Portfolio of Essay #1 and 2 Short Pieces: 120 pts.
Essays #1 & #2 @ 100 pts. each: 200 pts.
Response Books (Responses & In-class Exercises): 200 pts.
Quizzes: 40 pts.
Final Exam Essay (Essay #3): 100 pts.
TOTAL: 660 pts.

*Short pieces have due dates for drafts and will be given letter grades before portfolio is due to give you a feel for college grading and the amount of additional revision needed. Only portfolio points will count toward final grade, however.

LATE PAPERS

Deducted points for each week-day an assignment is late:

Portfolio and essays: -10 pts.
Drafts (including points off portfolio if short pieces are late): -5 pts.
Responses: -10%

ABSENCE

Absence and tardiness are strongly discouraged. For each unexcused absence above three, 25 points will be deducted from your final grade. Absences beyond three will be excused only if documentation from a dean or doctor is provided.

COURSE GUIDELINES

1. All papers must be computer printed unless pre-arrangements are made. Papers are to be turned in at the beginning of class on the date due. Remember: for each day a paper is late, your grade for that paper will fall by approximately one letter.

Essay #1 may be re-submitted after revisions for additional points within a week of its return to you.

2. You are to keep a series of bluebooks, sequentially numbered, for written responses to readings, discussions, films, and lectures.

3. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If you submit any work which is not the product of your own study and efforts, you will receive a grade of F for that work and perhaps for the course.

4. This course requires six formal writings. Failure to turn in the portfolio, two essays, and final exam will result in a grade of NC.

6. You are strongly encouraged to seek one-to-one drafting and rewriting assistance from me during my office hours or by appointment and from the tutors in the Writing Center (301).
