James Buchanan's Estate, "The Wheatlands" At one time located west of Lancaster, President Buchanan's working 80 acre farm is now within the city limits, and sets on about 5 acres of land. The house is in original condition, with the stone steps, stone walks, shutters, venetian blinds and tin gutters in original shape. The interior has been repainted and wallpapered in a design consistent with the 1850's. Much of his furniture is preserved in the house. The house has no plumbing, however, a central heating and air conditioning system was installed to help preserve the house and its contents. The Lancaster Historical Society is located next door. The City of Lancaster also has many historic buildings, churches and graveyards well preserved. Below are some pictures taken during the Christmas season of 2003: |
