The Palace at Versailles
The Palace at Versailles, in France, influenced city planning in the United States. The magnificent palace was built for Louis XIV in the seventeenth century. Its opulence is representative of the Baroque period. One of the most beautiful rooms in the palace is the Hall of Mirrors.
The palace is surrounded by gardens that were planned by the landscape architect Andre Le Notre. Their overall layout is radiocentric, including the mile-long Grand Canal that leads away from the palace itself.
