Mexico City's Population
How many people live in Mexico City? The answer to that question is dependent upon several things.
First, it depends how you define Mexico City. One could take the area contained within the City of Mexico. However, that area is certainly smaller than what looks like Mexico City to an observer. One could take the entire federal district's population. One could make a case for adding in the population of the State of Mexico. Or, in defining the metropolitan area, one could make a good case for including some people who live in adjacent states and yet are part of the region that functions as a metropolitan area.
Another problem is the accuracy of population data that are available. Numbers on the following graph should be viewed as being little more than estimates of the total population of Mexico City's metropolitan area. Whatever we do, one thing is for sure: Mexico City has become one of the largest cities in the world.
