Made possible by the invention of agriculture, some of the world's first cities appeared in Mesopotamia (near the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers) and in the valley of the Indus River. The spread of cities may be described as a form of contagious diffusion. They spread across Europe almost like a wave, reaching locations nearer to the source before arriving in more distant locations.
