In the United States the Bureau of the Census defines individual metropolitan areas in terms of counties.  For example, the Pittsburgh metropolitan area is composed of six counties, and in 2000 had a total population of 2,358,695.

Taken together, all of the U.S. metropolitan areas were home to about 31.7% of the country's population (or 24 million people) in 1900.  By 2000, this figure had increased to 80.3% of the total population (or 226 million people).

As shown in the graph above, central cities were home to 21.1% of the U.S. population in 1900.  The figure peaked at  32.8% in 1950.  By 2000, only 28.7% (about 81 million people) lived in the central cities.

In 2000, the central city of Pittsburgh had a population of 334,563.

The population that lived in U.S. metropolitan areas, but outside the central cities, increased from 10.7% in 1900 to 51.6% in 2000.  

In 2000, the Pittsburgh metropolitan area outside of the central city of Pittsburgh had a population of  2,024,132.

Most people in the U.S. now live in metropolitan areas, but outside of the central cities.
