Counties are classified as "metropolitan" if they are part of a metropolitan area as defined in the census.
In the twentieth century, as America's cities spread farther and farther out from existing cities and across the landscape, the metropolitan population went from 24.1 million (31.7%) in 1900, to 226.0 million (80.3%) in 2000.
