Map Projection

Since the earth is not flat but a map is, there will always be some
distortion when all or part of the earth's surface is represented on a
map. The way that the earth's surface is transferred to a map is termed
map projection. There are many different types of projections. In
classrooms an "interrupted" projection is often used because the worst
distortion is placed over the world's oceans, leaving the continents relatively
true to their actual appearance.
