A Question About Map Scale

Q: If three maps are all the same size (perhaps 8-1/2 by 11"), the map at which of the following scales could show the largest area?

A) 1:24,000

B) 1: 125,000

C) 1:5,000,000

A: The correct answer is choice "C." A representative fraction of 1:5,000,000 means that one unit of length on the map represents 5,000,000 of those same units on the earth. Thus, if we choose to use inches as our unit of measure, a map that measures 8-1/2 inches by 11 inches could represent an area of the earth's surface that measures 42.5 million inches by 55 million inches!
