We will present a medieval feast for ourselves and guests on Tuesday, November 10th. Seek out medieval entertainment--and if you know any jugglers, actors, re-enactors, singers, or others who might perform for some good food, let me know. We cook the food, and we get entertained. Other guests will also be invited.
Here is the invitation.
The Menu. These are mostly taken from The Medieval Cookbook by Maggie Black, which contains a series of not too difficult and good-tasting recipes. Of the cookbooks I've seen, this has the best balance between recipes and discussions of medieval cooking and eating, as well as lots of nice illustrations. A second helpful one is Pleyn Delit: Medieval Cookery for Modern Cooks; this has a huge number of well-tested recipes, though disappointingly little discussion of medieval culinary culture. A third is The Medieval Kitchen: Recipes from France and Italy (to which countries England looked for cultural guidance); I'd recommend this if you are into cooking personally, since its extensive discussions are aimed at more experienced cooks. One other extensive discussion of medieval cookery, with recipes and discussions of feasting, is Fabulous Feasts: Medieval Cookery and Ceremony. I have copies of all which I can show you if you like.
Grading: This is part of your grade--come and enjoy!
