Derrick's Homepage : A Trip to England Back to the English Department Homepage

This trip complements both the Brit Lit 1 course in Fall, 2008 and the Seminar in Medieval and Renaissance Literature in the Spring, 2009, though any interested students may come. Over half of our time will be spent outside of London, where we will especially visit sites from ancient and medieval England. We will spend four nights in London as well, however, during which we will see plays as often as possible. It will be a very full trip!

Cost: Travel to/from and in England and rooms will be $1495.00. This price will also include some admission prices and theatre tickets. Above and beyond this, you will need money for lunch and dinner and other food, other admissions, and whatever you might want to buy. Here is full information about costs and travel. Here is the application as a Word file, and here is a copy as a .pdf. You can also get application information from the International Services office (114 Carruth Rizza Hall).

This is the prospective itinerary. Please note that this is a work in progress!

Jan 1: Depart Pittsburgh, 7:20 PM, arrive Washington, D.C. 8:24 PM;
Depart Washington, D.C. Jan. 1, 10:04 PM, arrive London Heathrow Jan. 2, 10:15 AM.

When in London we will be staying at the Meininger Hostel. The nearest tube stations are Gloucester Road (on the Piccadilly Line) and Kensington Palace (on the Circle and District lines).

We will always, or as often as accommodations and time permit, meet first in the in the morning. We will discuss what we will be seeing that day and digesting what we saw the previous night.

Fri., Jan. 2, AM: Arrive in the AM. We need to stay awake! We'll get into London, drop off our bags at the hostel, and then walk. We'll take the tube to Trafalgar Square (Charing Cross Station), and then walk east along the Strand and Fleet Street to St. Paul’s. Sights along the way include the Temple Church and St. Bride's. Dinner together.

Sat., Jan. 3: AM: I will guide you on a walk around ancient and medieval London. There’s not much left—the City burned in 1666, and bombing during WW2 did more damage—but we can trace some of its outlines. This will be a several mile walk. I hope to see the Tower (admission), the Globe (admission), Southwark Cathedral, and end at Chaucer's Tabard (or, at least, next door). We'll then walk or ride the tube to the West End, eat dinner, and see Twelfth Night, at Wyndham’s Theatre, starring Derek Jacobi (tickets included; reservations made).

Sun., Jan 4, AM: We will remain based in London today, but today in the morning we will take a trip north to see Hampton Court palace, which dates from the time of Henry VIII. This will be in the morning, arriving back in the early afternoon. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore what you'd like in London.

Mon., Jan. 5, AM: head to Oxford, home of the University. PM: tour of Oxford, including colleges and churches. Night at Oxford YHA.

Tues., Jan. 6, AM: head today to Stratford-on-Avon, the home of Shakespeare, to see the sights and then, in the evening, Romeo and Juliet. (tickets needed; reservations needed). Accomodations at Quilts and Croissants.

Weds., Jan. 7 , AM: head to Bath, tour of Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths (admission) and see the eighteenth-century buildings there as well; this is Jane Austen country. Night at the Edgar Hotel.

Thurs., Jan. 8 , AM: head to Salisbury. We will see the existing medieval cathedral in this town—with the tallest spire of any church in England—and the nearby monuments at Stonehenge and Old Sarum. Night at City Lodge (note that this hotel, uniquely, does not include breakfast).

Fri., Jan. 9 , AM: head back to London for one more night at the Meininger. In the afternoon we'll visit the British Library and/or the British Museum. In the evening we'll have dinner together; then we'll see August, Osage County at the National Theatre (tickets paid for by the English department; reservations made).

Sat., Jan. 10: the morning is yours to travel around London. I'll be visiting Westminster Cathedral if you want to come along. In the afternoon we fly home:
depart London Heathrow at 4:20 PM, arrive Washington, D.C. at 7:48 PM;
depart Washington, D.C. at 9:55 PM arrive Pittsburgh at 11:01 PM. Term starts on Monday!
