POSITIONS

Present:
Professor: August 22, 1992 to date, Department of Biology, Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock, PA. Preparing and teaching courses in Ecology, Freshwater Biomonitoring, Aquatic and Wetland Plants, Environmental Biology, and General Biology. Conducting research on patterns and mechanisms of algal succession in streams and the recovery of stream ecosystems following treatment for acid mine drainage. Directing student research in ecology.

Associate Editor for the Journal of the North American Benthological Socieity:  2005-present.   Soliciting reviewers for and editing manuscripts related to periphyton ecology.

Past:
Postdoctoral Research Associate: 1990-1992, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE. As part of an Office of Naval Research funded project with Kyle D. Hoagland, examining the adhesion, biochemistry and morphology of diatom extracellular polysaccharides. My position involved culturing algae, and designing and conducting experiments on the colonization dynamics of diatoms in lentic, lotic and marine habitats. I taught Advanced Limnology and portions of Limnology.

Research Associate: January 1990 - September 1990, Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR. In connection with a project with C.D. McIntire, S.V. Gregory and G.A. Lamberti examining competition between herbivores in streams. Responsible for collecting, identifying and enumerating algal samples from both laboratory and field experiments.

Teaching/Research Assistant: 1985 - 1990, Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR. Preparing and teaching laboratories for courses in Plant Physiology. Conducting research in conjunction with C.D. McIntire examining the effects of current regime, irradiance and herbivory on periphyton assemblages in laboratory streams. Responsible for the algal portion of a field experiment investigating herbivory in streams surrounding Mount St. Helens (summer 1986).

Aquatic Biologist: 1983 - 1985, New York State Department of Health, Wadsworth Center for Laboratories and Research, Albany, NY. As part of a project with Karl Simpson to examine macroinvertebrate-substrate relationships in the freshwater region of the Hudson River. My position involved collecting samples, identifying organisms (primarily chironomids, oligochaetes and mollusks) and analyzing data.

Teaching/Research Assistant: 1981 - 1983, Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, University of Maine at Orono, Orono, ME. Preparing and teaching laboratories in Limnology and General Biology. Conducting research on living and fossil diatoms in low pH lakes as part of a paleolimnology project with R.B. Davis examining the impact of acidic precipitation on the biology of lakes.
